Connecting Korean adoptees in Los Angeles through culture, heritage, and community.

Our History

The Association of Korean Adoptees (AKA) began in June 1994 as an informal gathering of adoptees and friends organized by Jo Rankin, SoYun Roe, and Basil Zanda. What started as a small group of eight people quickly grew into a supportive community that met regularly to share experiences, celebrate heritage, and connect over shared roots. By 1995, AKA had gained local and national recognition, helping spark the formation of other Korean adoptee groups throughout California.

Nearly three decades later, the Los Angeles chapter continues that spirit of connection and advocacy. In May 2024, a new official Board was formed to revitalize the community and create more opportunities for adoptees to come together. Today, AKA-LA focuses on hosting regular gatherings, cultural events, and discussions that celebrate Korean heritage, support personal identity journeys, and strengthen the adoptee community across Southern California.

The Board looks forward to building on this legacy, fostering lasting connections, promoting visibility, and ensuring a thriving space for future generations of Korean adoptees.
